HARRISONBURG, Va., March 2, 2011 – James Madison pounded out a season-high 16 hits, including seven extra-base hits, and sophomore right-hander Cara Stecher (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy) tossed her third complete game of the season as JMU defeated Georgetown 15-1 in five innings in its home opener at Veterans Memorial Park on Wednesday.
The Dukes have won seven of their last eight games to improve to 8-3 on the season. Georgetown dropped to 2-8 with the loss.
Stecher improved to 3-0 on the season after limiting Georgetown to one run on three hits and a walk in five innings pitched. The sophomore from New Castle, Del. struck out five.
Mackensey Carter gave up seven runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings pitched to drop to 2-4. She struck out one and walked two.
JMU got hits from 11 different players including a 3-for-3 outing from sophomore center fielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange). Butler added a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Junior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) went 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk, two runs and an RBI while sophomore first baseman Haley Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) doubled twice and drove in three.
First baseman Cara Savarese led the Hoyas with two hits, including a double, and a RBI. Third baseman Jenna Stark had a hit and a run scored while catcher Shikara Lowe contributed a walk.
Georgetown took the lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Savarese. Stark led off the inning with a single up and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a ground-out, Savarese directed a 2-2 pitch through the hole on the right side to chase home Stark.
The Dukes responded with a nine-run explosion in the bottom of the third. Burnham led off the frame with a single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt senior left fielder Chel'sea Ryan (Sandston, Va./Henrico). After a single by junior second baseman Caitlen Manning (Prince George, Va./Prince George), JMU got doubles from five of its next six batters to open up a 6-1 lead. Right-hander Hannah Slovacek came in to relieve Carter, but immediately gave up a triple off the fence in center to Burnham. After a walk by Ryan, Burnham scored on a double steal before junior pinch hitter Michelle Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) capped off the inning with an RBI single through the left side.
