HARRISONBURG, Va., May 10, 2011 - Three pitchers combined to limit James Madison to five hits as Longwood recorded a 6-4 road win in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
Longwood improved to 28-15 overall as 33rd-year head coach Buddy Bolding posted his 900th career victory (900-492-4). JMU fell to 31-17.
Starter Cory Ramsey improved to 6-3 on the season. He exited in the eighth inning with one run surrendered on four hits and the bases loaded. He ended the night tagged with four runs as all three runners came in to score against reliever Kyler Morgan.
Longwood built a 6-1 lead in the game before JMU got to Ramsey and Morgan in the eighth. The Dukes had two on and one out when the Lancers turned to one of the nation's top closers, Mark Montgomery (0.61 ERA). A groundout and a walk loaded the bases before Montgomery escaped with a strikeout. He proceeded to post four of his five outs recorded with strikeouts and picked up his 10th save of the season.
Second baseman Brant Jones and designated hitter Justin Lacy combined for half of Longwood's 12 hits in the third and fourth spots in the order. Jones was 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored while Lacy was 3-for-4 with a walk. Center fielder Chris Briere had two hits and two RBIs with a solo home run.
Freshman Trent Cundiff (Roanoke, Va./Northside) took the loss to fall to 1-2. In his first collegiate start, he allowed three runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings. Freshman Luke Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) struck out the only batter he faced to escape a two-on jam in the fourth. Sophomore Johnny Bladel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) tossed 1 2/3 scoreless to finish the game.
Five different Dukes had the five JMU hits in the game. Sophomore first baseman Matt Tenaglia (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) had the only RBI hit with a single in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
Longwood leadoff batter Matt Dickason was hit with the second pitch of the game. He was sacrificed to second and scored on a two-out single by Lacy.
Consecutive leadoff singles by Jones and Lacy put runners on the corners in the fourth for Longwood. Catcher Scott Burkett hit a high bouncer just off Freshman Ty McFarland's (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) extended glove at third base for the RBI single and a 2-0 lead. A hit batter loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly by first baseman Robbie Newman made it 3-0.
Hitless until the fifth inning, JMU got its first run as junior Evan Scott (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) led off with a double and sophomore second baseman Bradley Shaban (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) was hit by a pitch. Freshman shortstop Conner Brown (Richmond, Va./Godwin) sacrificed both a base and a groundout by sophomore right fielder Cole McInturff (Centreville, Va./Westfield) plated Scott to make it 3-1.
The Lancers responded in the sixth as right fielder Dustin Sollars led off with a four-pitch walk. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on Briere's single up the middle to make it 4-1.
Jones led off the seventh inning with a solo home run to left to make it 5-1 for the Lancers. Briere added a solo shot to left to lead off the eighth, his second of the season with both coming against the Dukes.
JMU loaded the bases with one out in the eighth on a Brow
