FARMVILLE, Va., Sept. 10, 2011 - James Madison redshirt sophomore Adam Bastidas (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) scored twice, including the tying goal with 7:19 left in regulation, as the Dukes (2-0-1) battled Longwood (1-2-1) to a 3-3 double-overtime tie in men's soccer Saturday afternoon.
The Dukes out-shot the Lancers 21-9, but Longwood goalkeeper Joel Helmick made eight saves, including two in the closing minutes of regulation, to help his team preserve the tie. JMU redshirt senior goalkeeper Justin Epperson (Herndon, Va./Oakton) finished with three saves.
Bastidas scored the game-tying goal on a header off a free kick from senior Patrick Innes (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale).
Bastidas opened the game's scoring with a goal off a deflection from six yards out, putting the Dukes up 1-0 in the 21st minute.
However, just 1:31 later, Longwood's Zach Crandall's header off a Nick Surkamp throw-in tied the game at 1-1.
JMU quickly regained the lead, though, as Innes tallied a goal off a crossing pass from redshirt junior Christian McLaughlin (Herndon, Va./Herndon). That score came just 2:14 after Longwood had tied the game.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Longwood tied the game on a Surkamp penalty kick. The Lancers went ahead 3-2 when Zach Mahon scored on a header off a ball served by Jared Windt with 12:51 left in the match.
JMU returns to action Tuesday night with a match at top-ranked North Carolina (7 p.m.).
