Football Has 10 Named To All-CAA Squads

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Led by four first-team selections, the James Madison football team had 10 players named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association squads, announced by the league today.
Redshirt senior offensive lineman Earl Watford (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz), redshirt junior linebacker Stephon Robertson (Alexandria, Va./Edison), sophomore safety Dean Marlowe (Queens, N.Y./Holy Cross HS) and redshirt senior Ryan Smith (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry (Marshall)), as a punt returner, were named First Team All-CAA by the league's coaches. Redshirt junior running back Dae'Quan Scott (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee), redshirt senior h-back/fullback Brian Barlow (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) and redshirt junior kicker Cameron Starke (Halifax, Va./Halifax County (West Virginia)) garnered second team honors, while redshirt junior defensive lineman Tyler Snow (Vinton, Va./William Byrd), senior safety Jakarie Jackson (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) and redshirt senior punter David Skahn (Centreville, Va./Westfield) were selected to the third team.
Below are the information on each of JMU's All-CAA selections.
First Team All-CAA
Earl Watford
First Team All-CAA for the second consecutive season
Started all 11 games on the offensive line while also being a team captain for JMU, grading out as the top offensive lineman for the Dukes
Allowed just one sack on the season while, under extremely stringent linemen grading, graded out 80 percent or higher six times and 90 percent or better twice.
Graded out at 85 percent for the season
Had 25 knockdowns on the year
Offense ranked fourth in rushing offense in the CAA at 209.0 yards per game and 4.6 yards per rush
Blocked for Dae'Quan Scott, who ranked third in the CAA in rushing at 86.8 yards per game and earned Second Team All-CAA honors this year
Has played in 43 games in his career, starting in 37 of them including the last 35 straight
Stephon Robertson
The 2012 CAA Defensive Player of the Year
Two-time All-CAA First Team selection after being the 2012 CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year
One of JMU's team captains, he led the JMU defense that was second in the CAA (24th in FCS) in scoring, first in rushing defense (19th nationally) and fifth in pass defense
Started all 11 games and led the Dukes with 101 tackles on the season, his second straight year with more than 100 tackles
Ranked third in the CAA and tied for 43rd nationally at 9.18 tackles per game
His tackle totals included 48 solos, 8.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and five pass breakups
Led JMU in tackles in seven of the 11 games played this year and recorded double-digit tackles in six games, five of them CAA contests.
One of 20 players on the Buck Buchanan Watch List for the nation's top defensive player
In his career, Robertson has amassed 304 career tackles, an average over his career of 8.94 tackles per game despite being targeted as a threat by every opposing offense.
Dean Marlowe
Only sophomore on the CAA defensive first team and one of four non-seniors
One of the leaders on a JMU defense that was second in the CAA in scoring, first in rushing stats and fifth in pass defense
Had a career season-high 82 tackles on the year including 44 solos, 5.0 for loss, seven passes defended, team-high tying three interceptions, one forced fumble and one safety
Had a season-high 12 tackles in the home win over William & Mary, one of two games with 10 or more tackles on the year
Ranked second on the team, ninth in the CAA overall and third among CAA defensive backs at 7.45 tackles per game and 7.63 in league contests
Tied for eighth in the CAA with three interceptions (0.27 per game)
Was a Third Team All-CAA honoree at safety in 2011
Ryan Smith
Had 23 punt returns for 143 yards (6.2 yards per return) with a season long of 30 yards
His 23 punt returns led the CAA while his 143 return yards ranked second
Ranked second in the CAA and 41st in FCS football at 6.22 yards per return
Also had eight kickoff returns for 177 yards (22.1 yards per return) with a long of 31
Also tied for the team lead with three interceptions defensively
Second Team All-CAA
Dae'Quan Scott
Led the team in a pair of rushing categories with 155 carries and 781 yards (5.0 yards per carry) while also scoring eight times on the ground
Led the team in scoring with 72 points (12 total touchdowns)
Ranked third in the league and 46th nationally in rushing at 85.78 yards in his nine games played
Recorded four 100-yard rushing games during the season (three of them in CAA play), raising his career total to 12
Was also fourth in the CAA in scoring at 8.00 points per game, which tied for 27th in FCS football
Finishes his junior year at 2,292 career rushing yards, ranking 11th all-time, while his 180 career points ranks ninth
Was also the league leader and 31st in the country at 128.56 all-purpose rushing yards per game
Also had 30 receptions, tying for the team lead, for 295 yards and a team-best four touchdown catches
Chipped in seven punt returns for 81 yards (11.6 yards per return) with a long of 21
Brian Barlow
Was one of the team captains, the second straight year he served in that role
Earned Second Team All-CAA honors for the second consecutive year
Led the team in two receiving categories with 30 receptions and 425 yards (14.2 yards per game) while adding three touchdown catches
His 425 receiving yards were a career best, while his 30 receptions was just three shy of his previous season best
His three touchdowns on the year were a career high and tied for fourth on the team in scoring with 18 points
Posted at least one catch in all 10 games played this season with a season-high five receptions for 62 yards and a score in a win at Rhode Island
Had four receptions for a career high-tying 79 yards and one touchdown at Maine
His 44-yard touchdown reception at Maine was a career long catch
Played in 41 career games with 30 career starts, finishing with 74 career receptions for 855 yards and four touchdowns
Cameron Starke
Ranked second on the team in scoring with 67 points
Hit all 37 of his point after attempts on the year
Was 10-for-14 (71.4 percent) on the year on field goal attempts, including a perfect 7-for-7 inside 40 yards
Hit a career-long 49-yard field goal as part of the 13-10 win over No. 13 Towson
Also averaged 58.1 yards on 39 kickoffs, with nine of them going for touchbacks
For his career he is 25-of-33 (.758) on field goals and 71-of-72 (.987) on extra points, including two game-winning field goals on final plays in 2011
Third Team All-CAA
Tyler Snow
Started all 10 games (missed one due to injury) on the defensive line for the Dukes, serving as one of the team captains
Totaled 37 tackles, including 14 solos, along with 5.0 tackles for loss, a team-high six quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick
Tied for 18th among defensive linemen in the CAA for tackles
Had a career-high eight tackles in the home win over Georgia State
Tied his previous career high with seven tackles with 1.0 tackle for loss and a pair of quarterback hurries in the home win over No. 12 Towson
Had at least four tackles in four games this year
Played in 34 of a possible 35 career games with 32 starts, including starting his last 30 in a row
Has 124 career tackles, including 14.0 for loss
Jakarie Jackson
Was one of the team captains for the Dukes, where he started eight of nine games played
Totaled 60 tackles, including 43 solos, in just nine games played (lost two due to injury), which ranked third on the team for total tackles
Added 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, one interception and six passes defended
Ranked third for the Dukes, 19th in the CAA and seventh among defensive backs at 6.67 tackles per game
Had a career-high 14 tackles against West Virginia, while recording 12 tackles against Georgia State
Four-year starter for the Dukes, playing in 42 games with 34 starts, including 11 games and six starts as a true freshman
Finished his career with 215 total tackles, surpassing the 200-tackle mark during the season
David Skahn
Was fourth in the CAA at 38.85 yards per punt on 48 punts with 30 fair catches, 16 inside the 20, four of 50 yards or more and only two touchbacks
More impressively, he gave up just one punt return for three yards this year, making his net punting average 37.75
Team ranked tops in the CAA and 19th in the nation at 37.70 net yards per punt
Had a career-long 65-yard punt against Alcorn State
