CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Feb. 25, 2012 – James Madison gave up 10 runs combined in the two fourth innings of their doubleheader at the Carolina Classic to drop a pair of decisions to Minnesota and Penn State at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday. JMU lost game one 9-1 in six inning to Minnesota before falling 5-4 in the night cap against PSU.
JMU dropped to 0-3 in the tournament and 2-4 on the season. Minnesota upped its record to 9-3 on the year while Penn State improved to 2-4.
In game two of the day, freshman right-hander Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) tossed her third complete game in as many starts. She took the loss to drop to 1-2 after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and six walks while striking out three.
Marissa Diescher earned the win to improve to 1-2. She allowed four runs on six hits and six walks and struck out one. Lisa Akamine struck out one in 1/3 inning of relief.
Shortstop Alyssa Renwick and catcher Danee Collett had two hits and a run each to guide the Nittany Lion offense. Collett added two RBIs while pinch hitter Lauren Anderson went 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Third baseman Kasie Hatfield reached base three times, picking up a single and two walks.
Freshman right fielder Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) had two hits, a walk and a RBI to pace the Dukes. Junior first baseman Haley Johnson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) contributed two hits and a RBI while senior shortstop Ashley Burnham (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) hit a home run and scored twice.
JMU got off to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior center fielder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) and senior second baseman Caitlen Manning (Prince George, Va./Prince George) each walked to start off the frame. Burnham followed with a fielder's choice in which all three runners advanced safely before a wild pitch plated the game's first run. A RBI ground-out by Johnson and an infield single by Heath plated two more runs for the Dukes.
PSU came back to take the lead with a four-run fourth inning. Mooney got the first batter of the frame to ground out, but followed that with back-to-back walks to Hatfield and second baseman Lauren Yao. An infield single by Renwick loaded the base, setting up Anderson for a game-tying, two-run single. Another walk loaded up the bases again and a passed ball chased home the go-ahead run.>
