Softball Drops Doubleheader at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va., March 21, 2012 – The James Madison softball team dropped a doubleheader at Longwood in Farmville, Va., falling 2-1 in game one before losing 9-0 in five innings in game two.
JMU has lost three straight to fall to 10-17 on the season while Longwood improved to 20-9.
In game two, the Lancers got a one-hit shutout from freshman pitcher Libby Morris and strung together 11 singles and three walks to pick up the win. Morris improved to 9-5 after giving up a third-inning single and a walk in five innings pitched.
Junior right-hander Cara Stecher (New Castle, Del./Caravel Academy) fell to 1-1 on the season. She allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out one in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Freshman right-hander Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) gave up four runs on three hits and two walks in 1/3 inning of relief. Rookie right-hander Reba DePriest (Apache Junction, Ariz./Skyline) tossed two innings of shutout relief, striking out three.
The Lancers offense was paced by center fielder Leta Bressin who went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Left fielder Kori Nishitomi added a 3-for-3 performance with a run and a RBI while designated player Brooke Short went 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
Freshman left fielder Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) picked up the only hit for Madison, going 1-for-2 with a single. Sophomore third baseman Caitlin Sandy (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt) walked in two trips to the plate.
Longwood took advantage of a couple of miscues in the field to grab a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Bressin led off with a single to left and moved to second on an error in the outfield. In the ensuing at bat, Nishitomi dropped down a bunt and beat the throw to first for a single. Junior first baseman Haley Johnson's (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) throw to first was wide of the bag allowing Bressin to score from second.
The Lancers added to their lead with five hits and a walk in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 5-0 advantage. Shortstop Ashley Kramer led off with a single to center. After a pop-up, first baseman Courtney Long drew a walk, moving Kramer to second. Stecher got the next batter to strikeout, but an infield single by Bressin and a head's up base running play allowed Kramer to score from second. Bressin's single was the first of four straight by LW, chasing in three more runs.
