HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison cross country team opened the 2012 season with a strong team showing at the VMI Invitational in Lexington, Va., today.
Sophomore Rachel Hagen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) had a sixth-place finish and posted the day's best time for the Dukes, finishing the 5k course in 19:25.70. Close behind her were fellow sophomores Tiel Westbrook (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis), who finished seventh with a time of 19:29.60, and Kelsey Langton (Hamilton Square, N.J./Notre Dame H.S.), who recorded a 19:43.60 course time and an eighth-place finish.
Kathleen Stewart (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) led the JMU freshmen in their first collegiate meet with a ninth-place finish in 19:49.80. Laura Dobbs (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) ran the 5k in 21:04.20 and Emily Cole (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) came in at 21:39.80.
Also competing in the first race of the year were seniors Michelle Savarese (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) and Jacki Ferrance (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) who had times of 20:16.90 and 20:31.40, respectively.
The Dukes did not send many of their top runners to Lexington as they will likely have their first race in the 2012 JMU Open Invitational on Saturday, September 15 at New Market Battlefield in New Market, Va. There will be a men's race for visiting teams at 10 a.m. with the women following at 11 a.m.
