HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 9, 2013 – Sophomore Daniel Roppert (Munich, Germany/Dorfen) scored late in the game, but it wasn't enough as the James Madison men's soccer team fell 2-1 to visiting Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association game Wednesday night at University Park.
The Blue Hens (9-1, 1-0 CAA), winners of six straight games, struck early with a goal by Jaime Martinez in the seventh minute. A corner kick by Kyle Nuel set Martinez up for a header opportunity in front of the net and he delivered with his fourth goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 until Delaware scored again in the 78th minute. Roberto Gimenez tallied his first goal of the season, receiving a throughball from Martinez and finishing far post.
Roppert gave the Dukes (4-5-1, 0-2-0) hope with his goal in the 83rd minute, finishing a corner kick by senior Adam Bastidas (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) with a header. Roppert is second on the team with three goals, while Bastidas leads the team with three assists.
Delaware finished with a 14-7 advantage in shots, but the teams each registered four shots on goal. Borja Barbero made three saves for the Blue Hens, while junior Bill Groben (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) stopped two shots.
The loss ends the Dukes four-game unbeaten streak against the Blue Hens. They still lead the all-time series 11-4-4.
Despite playing shorthanded for a large chunk of the season and playing against multiple regionally-ranked opponents, JMU dropped below .500 for the first time all year. Delaware received votes in the latest NSCAA national rankings and is fifth in the South Atlantic Region. The Blue Hens are the Dukes' fourth opponent this year that is listed in the most recent regional rankings.
JMU will continue conference play when it travels to UNC Wilmington for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday.
