Softball Earns Doubleheader Split on Day Two in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C., Feb. 16, 2013 – The James Madison softball team earned a doubleheader split on day two of the College of Charleston Cougar Classic. JMU downed Towson 11-1 in five innings in game two after falling to East Tennessee State 5-4 in eight innings in game one.
The split ran the Dukes record to 3-1 on the season after opening the season with a sweep on Friday. Towson dropped to 0-3 on the weekend on 4-4 overall. ETSU improved to 2-5 this season and 2-1 in the tournament.
In game two, Madison pounded out 12 hits and scored 11 runs in five innings of work. Senior catcher Megan Shinaberry (Davie, Fla./McCarthy) led the way, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and a RBI. Junior shortstop Caitlin Sandy (Fayetteville, N.C./Jack Britt) homered and drove in two runs, while senior centerfilder Jasmine Butler (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange) added two hits, two runs and a RBI. Sophomore left fielder Morgan Heath (Grafton, Va./Yorktown) doubled and drove in three in three at-bats.
Towson designated player Erin Wolffe went 1-for-1 with a double, a walk and a RBI to pace the Tiger attack. Center fielder Olivia Yarbrough had a hit in three at-bats and second baseman Macie McGeehan went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Sophomore right-hander Reba DePriest (Apache Junction, Ariz./Skyline) earned the win to improve to 1-0. She went the distance in the circle, allowing one run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Ambar Hickman earned the loss for TU to drop to 1-1. She gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits. She struck out two and walked none in 3 1/3 innings of work. Katie Lingmai ceded four runs on five hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
JMU opened the scoring in the top of first, taking advantage of a Towson miscue for an unearned run. Butler started the rally with a double to left field and scored on a two-out fielding error by the Tiger shortstop.
The Dukes sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the fourth inning, scoring seven runs on eight hits to jump in front 8-0.
