MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – The James Madison men's golf team finished ninth at the 2013 Golf Galaxy VCU Shootout, Sept. 23-24. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by VCU, was played at the Hermitage Country Club (Par 72 - 6,955 yards) in Manakin-Sabot, Va.
Madison was not able to move up in its final 18, posting an 8-over 296 to finish at 27-over 891. Second-round leader Virginia Tech ran away from the field with a final round 14-under 274 to finish at 23-under 841, 22 shots ahead of runner-up Iowa State at 1-under 863. Radford was third at 5-over 869, with Richmond in fourth at 9-over 873. Old Dominion rounded out the top-five teams at 11-over 875.
Freshman Ryan Cole was the top Duke at 2-under 214 after a final round 1-over 73, finishing in tie for seventh for his first collegiate top-10 finish. Freshman Poom Pattaropong was next in a tie for 31st after his final round 3-over 75 put him at 6-over 222. Junior Jon Weiss tied for 46th at 10-over 226, while junior Trey Smith tied for 53rd at 13-over 229. Senior Ben Firebaugh was the final scoring Duke at 27-over 241. Individually, sophomore Chris Kapsak placed 58th at 16-over 232.
The Dukes will return to the course Mon.-Tue., Sept. 30-Oct. 1, playing in the Joe Agee Invitational at Williamsburg Country Club in Williamsburg, Va.
