CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The James Madison men's tennis team closed the door on the 2014-15 fall tournament slate as the Dukes wrapped up their time at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday.
Junior Maxi Branth(Stockholm Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) battled back from a one-set deficit (6-3) to Old Dominion's Carlos Lopez Villa in the main singles draw round-of-64 with his own 6-3 victory in set two to tie the match at 1-1. Lopez Villa, however, posted a 6-2 win in set three to claim the match 2-1.
"I was really pleased with Maxi's effort against Lopez Villa," Head Coach Steve Secordsaid. "Lopez Villa won this tournament in 2013, and it was good to see Maxi split sets and gain some confidence carrying us into the spring. Each member of the team knows what they can work on for the rest of this semester, and we will keep working to get better every day."
In the same round, junior Robert Stirling(Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) to Virginia Tech's Jaio Monteiro, and sophomore Brett Moorhead(Midlothian, Va./Cosby) dropped a two-set decision (6-0, 6-2) to Virginia Tech's Andreas Bjerrehus.
Sophomore Sebastian Salinas (Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) won a consolation singles match over Renier Moolman (St. Joe's) in straight 6-2 sets.
The Dukes return to action in January 2015 as they begin their spring dual slate en route to the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament April 16-19, 2015, at a location to be determined.
