JMU Falls 7-0 at No. 38 Virginia Tech in Spring Opener

BLACKSBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis dropped a 7-0 decision at No. 38 Virginia Tech in the Dukes' dual season opener at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday afternoon.
The Hokies (2-0) swept the Dukes (1-0) in doubles action to start the day with a 1-0 lead. The sophomore-junior duo of Brett Moorhead(Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and Maxi Branth (Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) fell 6-1 to Florian Nicoud and Hunter Koontz at No. 3 doubles before Virginia Tech secured the doubles point as Andreas Bjerrehus and Jai Corbett defeated sophomore Miljan Ruzic(Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College) and freshman Stephen Goldman(Lutz, Fla./Gaither) 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Sebastian Salinas(Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) and junior Robert Stirling(Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) battled at No. 2 doubles, but fell 6-4 to Eduoardo Tessaro and Amerigo Contini.
In singles action, Branth lost in straight 6-0 sets to Koontz at the No. 2 position and Stirling fell 6-1, 6-2 to Contini, ranked 35th in the nation, at the No. 1 position to give the Hokies a 3-0 lead on the match.
Virginia Tech clinched the decisive fourth point when Nicoud, ranked 94th nationally, won in straight 6-2 sets over Ruzic at the No. 4 singles position.
Salinas clashed with Tessaro at the No. 3 singles position, but lost in two sets (6-4, 6-3). Goldman was defeated 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles by Aaron Gomez, and Moorhead fell 6-2, 6-2 to Corbett at No. 5 singles as the Hokies took the 7-0 match win.
JMU continues its opening weekend with the VCU 4-1 Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 18. The Dukes face Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware at noon before taking on No. 51 VCU at 3 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
