Dukes Prevail in Singles on Day Two of UVa Fall Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The James Madison men's tennis team went a combined 10-2 on Saturday as the Dukes began singles play on day two of the UVa Fall Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Junior Robert Stirling(Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) advanced to Sunday's semifinal round of the Orange Singles Flight with a pair of come-from-behind, three-set victories. After falling behind with a 6-4 loss to Will Juggins (William and Mary) in set one of their round-of-16 match, he battled back for a 7-6(8) victory in set two before securing the match victory with a 6-4 set-three win. In the quarterfinals, he rebounded from a 7-6(5) loss in set one to Dillon Segur (Liberty) with a pair of 6-4 wins in sets two and three to earn the match victory.
In the White Singles Flight, sophomore Brett Moorhead(Midlothian, Va./Cosby) earned wins in the round-of-16 and quarterfinals. He opened the flight with a two-set victory (6-0, 6-2) over Justin Lansinger (UMBC). He moved on to the quarterfinals where he began with a 6-1 win in set one against JB Gough (Davidson). After falling 6-4 in set two, he recovered with a 6-3 win in set three for the match victory and advanced to Sunday's semifinals.
Freshman Stephen Goldman(Lutz, Fla./Gaither) posted a pair of two-set wins on Saturday in the Red Singles Flight. He won 6-4, 6-3 over Darian Hashemzadeh (GW) in the round-of-16 and 6-4, 6-2 over Daniel Gutierrez (GMU) in the quarterfinals.
Junior Maxi Branth(Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) received a bye through the round-of-16 in the Black Singles Flight and opened with a quarterfinal match-up against VCU's Jacob Svensson. Branth dropped set one 6-2 but regrouped for 6-2 wins of his own in sets two and three to take the match.
Sophomore Miljan Ruzic(Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College) dropped a three-set decision to George Mason's Nick Barker in the Gold Singles Flight. Ruzic rallied with a 6-3 win in set two after a 6-4 loss in set one to tie the match, but was unable to overcome Barker and fell 6-3 in set three for the match loss. In the consolation quarterfinals, Ruzic rebounded with a 6-0, 6-2 win over VCU's Aleh Drobysh.
In the Blue Singles Flight, sophomore Sebastian Salinas(Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) lost in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to VCU's Michal Voscek in the round-of-16. He tallied a straight-set win (6-3, 6-1) over George Mason's Tanner Baine in the consolation quarterfinal round.
The Dukes finish the UVa Fall Classic on Sunday, Oct. 5 in Charlottesville, Va. competing at both the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center and Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
