STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern rallied in singles play, capturing a trio of three-set wins to upend James Madison, 4-2, in Sun Belt Conference men's tennis action on Friday at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles (6-6, 1-0 Sun Belt) evened their record after securing singles victories on courts one, three, four and five.
For the Dukes (8-6, 1-1 Sun Belt), they suffered their third straight setback after winning the doubles point and producing just one singles win on court six from
Zach Fleishman.
GS improved to 5-2 all-time in the series and has won all four bouts against JMU since the teams became conference mates. JMU has won the doubles point in three of the four matchups since the spring of 2023.
JMU took the early lead with a pair of doubles wins. The team of
Harrison Lee and
Francisco Sinopoli cruised to a 6-1 win on court three against Willy Mirarchi and Matthew Mitchell. The Dukes captured the doubles point on court one, as
Esteve Agusti and
Aurelien Schmitt downed Gregoire Delattre and Davis Taylor by a 6-2 margin.
In singles play, GS quickly tied things back up, as Albert Widell upended
Gur Libal, 6-2, 6-1, on court five.
JMU regained the lead, at 2-1, when Fleishman dominated the second set en route to a 7-6, 6-0 victory versus Matthew Mitchell on court six.
The final four matches would all go the distance, with Georgia Southern taking three courts to win its conference opener.
The Eagles knotted things at 2-2 on court three, where Taylor split the opening two sets before cruising in the third to beat Sinopoli, at 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. The hosts took its first lead, at 3-2, as Saar rallied past Agusti for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win on court one.
Georgia Southern clinched the match on court four, as Mirarchi held off
Ryan Morgan in the third set to take the decisive point by scores of 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. The final match, Schmitt and Delattre on court two, went unfinished at 7-6, 6-7, 4-4.
JMU returns home to host Navy on Sunday, March 22 with an 11 a.m. start time from Hillside Courts.
