CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The James Madison men's tennis team wrapped up singles play on the final day of the UVa Fall Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Sunday.
Junior Maxi Branth(Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) posted the best solo finish of the tournament with second place in the Black Singles Flight. Branth earned a tiebreaker win (6-2, 6-7(5), 10-5) in his three-set semifinal match with Ricardo Pabon (ETSU). His three-set championship match, however, ended with a tiebreaker loss (6-3, 6-7(6), 10-6) to Sam Matheson (Liberty).
Freshman Stephen Goldman(Lutz, Fla./Gaither) notched third place in the Red Singles Flight. He fell in two sets (7-5, 6-2) in his semifinal match with VCU's Matthew Krizinger, but rebounded in his third-place match-up with Oliver Dedding (Citadel) to battle for a come-from-behind, three-set victory (2-6, 6-3, 11-9).
Sophomore Miljan Ruzic(Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College) went 2-0 on the final day of the tournament in the Gold Singles Flight consolation bracket. He dropped Radford's Janken Thoen in straight 6-3 sets in the consolation semifinals before winning in straight 6-2 sets over Liberty's David Bush in the consolation final.
The Dukes tallied fourth-place finishes from junior Robert Stirling(Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) and sophomore Brett Moorhead(Midlothian, Va./Cosby) in the Orange Singles Flight and White Singles Flight, respectively. Stirling fell in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) to Javier Jover (ODU) in the Orange Singles semifinals and suffered a three-set loss (2-6, 6-3, 10-4) to Dominic Pascal (Norfolk State) in the third-place match. Moorhead dropped his White Singles semifinal match to Floriant Nicoud (VT) in straight 6-1 sets before falling 6-4, 6-1 to Sebastian Yllera (ETSU) in their third-place match.
In the Blue Singles Flight consolation bracket, sophomore Sebastian Salinas(Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) went 1-1 on day three of the UVa Fall Classic. He opened with a 6-0, 7-6(6) win against UMBC's Alexandre Drean in the consolation semifinals and finished with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 loss against Old Dominion's Michael Weindl in the consolation final.
JMU next competes at the 49ers Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina, Oct. 10-12, its third of four tournaments over consecutive weekends this fall.
