On Friday, December 17, 2004, James Madison football concluded a program-defining season and an unprecedented postseason run with the program's first national championship as the Dukes defeated Montana 31-21 in the NCAA Division I-AA title game in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Riding a veteran and bruising offensive line, a stable of powerful running backs, an opportunistic defense and a versatile, accurate quarterback, the Dukes took control in the second half and overpowered the Griz to culminate a postseason that saw Madison compete in each round away from Harrisonburg.
