SOUTHPORT, N.C. - The James Madison women's golf program improved its second round score but could not move up and finished fifth at the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship, April 18-20. The two-day, 36-hole event was played at St. James' Plantation Reserve Club (Par 72 - 6,066 yards) in Southport, N.C.
After rain washed out the scheduled second round on Saturday, the field took to the course for the second and final round of the tournament on Sunday morning. The Dukes improved seven shots over their opening round and posted the second-best team score of the day at 29-over 317 to finisin in fifth at 65-over 641. College of Charleston took home the team title and the league's automatic NCAA berth after a final round 28-over 316 put the Cougars at 42-over 618. William & Mary and Delaware tied for second at 57-over 633 with UNCW in fourth at 58-over 634.
Junior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) tallied a team-best 4-over 76 in the final round to move up to a tie for fifth at 12-over 156, earning All-CAA honors for the second straight year. Fellow junior Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Phillippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) two shots back at 14-over 158 in a tie for eighth after her 5-over 77 in the last 18. Senior Ginger Mak (North Point, Hong Kong/The International School of Macao) concluded her college career with a tie for 17th at 18-over 162, followed by junior Nikola Wessels (Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) in a tie for 22nd at 21-over 165. Sophomore Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) rounded out the JMU team scoring in 40th at 31-over 175.
College of Charleston's Laura Fuenfstueck was the individual medalist at 4-over 148, winning the tournament by six shots over UNCW's Lori Beth Adams and teammate Julia Neumann at 10-over 154.
