Ruzic, Salinas Win A2 Doubles Title at Elon Fall Invitational

ELON, N.C. – Sophomores Miljan Ruzic(Sydney, Australia/St. Euphemia College) and Sebastian Salinas(Merida, Mexico/Preparatoria Abierta SEP) earned the first flight title of the fall for the James Madison men's tennis team on Sunday as the duo won the A2 Doubles Draw of the Elon Fall Invitational at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, North Carolina.
Ruzic and Salinas earned an 8-4 victory in the A2 Doubles Draw semifinal round over Old Dominion's Michael Weindl and Theophile Lanthiez to advance to the championship match. The tandem dropped UNC-Asheville's John Schubel and Thomas Orestis-Panoulas 8-3 to win the title.
Ruzic also appeared in the B1 Singles Backdraw consolation final, where he fell in two sets (7-5, 6-1) to Eduardo Landon (Georgia Southern).
Junior Maxi Branth(Stockholm, Sweden/Tullinge Gymnasium) won the A2 Backdraw consolation final, earning a three-set victory (6-3, 2-6, 6-1) over East Carolina's Patrick Wolterbeek. He and sophomore Brett Moorhead(Midlothian, Va./Cosby) came up short in their B1 Backdraw consolation final match against Elon's Robert Lindgren and Christopher Geaslen as the pair fell 8-3.
Freshman Stephen Goldman(Lutz, Fla./Gaither) and junior Robert Stirling(Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) suffered an 8-2 setback against Coastal Carolina's Philippe Tsangarides and Kaue Pereira in the A1 Doubles Draw semifinals. They finished in fourth place in the draw after falling 8-2 to UNC-Asheville's Brett Landau and Alex Croker in the third-place match.
In the B2 Doubles Backdraw, sophomore Alex Berdnikoff(Calgary, Alberta/Edge School for Athletes) and freshman Tim Portnov(Vancouver, B.C., Canada) fell 8-4 to Lorenz Schwab and Landon Rogers (Campbell) in their consolation match.
JMU returns to action next weekend (Oct. 3-4) as the Dukes head to the two-day UVa Fall Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia.
