James Madison will welcome its newest group into the Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, November 20. As we approach induction day, we will feature members of the new class each week. Tickets for the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner are still available.Today's focus is on All-American wrestling star Michael Coyle. Michael CoyleCompeting for the Dukes from 1995-2000, Coyle left his mark on the wrestling program with multiple championships and accolades. The Phillipsburg, N.J., native led JMU to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association Championships in 1999 and 2000 after earning individual CAA titles in the 141 lb. weight class in 1999 and the 133 lb. weight class in 2000.
His success earned him the CAA Wrestling Athlete of the Year award and an All-American nod for the 2000 season. Coyle posted a combined record of 49-15 over 1999 and 2000, including a 15-3 record in dual meets, eight major decisions, four technical falls and 22 falls en route to being named JMU's Most Outstanding Wrestler both years. Coyle ranks 18th in JMU history with 76 total victories and 13th in single-season victories with 27 recorded in the 1996-97 season while tallying a 4-5 career mark in the NCAA Championships.
All of this culminated in his inclusion on the CAA Silver Anniversary Team on which he was the only wrestler from James Madison. He is now one of five former student-athletes to be inducted into the JMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
