HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison women's soccer team has clinched the fourth seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament thanks to a 1-1 draw with William and Mary in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at University Park.
The Tribe came out firing and outshot the Dukes 18-9, including nine shots on goal, forcing redshirt senior goalkeeper Ellen Forrest to tie her season-high eight saves.
JMU opened the scoring in the 40th minute on redshirt junior forward Alyssa Zurlo's third goal of the season. Looking to get on the board before halftime, redshirt freshman defender Kylie Hegemier made a run up the right side of the field and sent in a centering cross. Tribe goalkeeper Caroline Casey came off of her line, but missed the ball and Zurlo capitalized with an easy finish.
Trailing by one in the 68th minute, William and Mary's senior midfielder Nicole Baxter sent a long ball over the top and into the 18-yard box. The ball landed just between two James Madison defenders where senior forward Barbara Platenberg found space and scored the equalizing goal for the Tribe.
With the fourth seed secured in the CAA Tournament, the Dukes will host fifth-seeded Northeastern in the quarterfinal round. The game is currently scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 1, with a start time to be announced.
