Charles Haley: A Football Life will premiere Thursday night on NFL Network, following the Thursday Night Football game between the Titans and Jaguars. The one-hour documentary will look at the life and football career of Pro Football Hall of Famer, five-time Super Bowl champion and former James Madison standout Charles Haley. It will feature interviews with Haley, his family, former teammates and coaches, team reporters, and more.
A Football Life is a NFL Network documentary series that began in 2011. The program highlights the lives of influential NFL players, coaches, owners and teams. It also looks at their lives beyond the football field and primarily uses interviews to develop a full profile. Charles Haley: A Football Life will be the 10th installment of the show's fifth season.
Haley was a four-year starter at defensive end/linebacker for JMU from 1982-85. During his time with the Dukes, he was a two-time All-American and three-time JMU Defensive MVP. He finished his JMU career as the school's all-time leader in tackles with 506. He also had three seasons of more than 100 tackles each.
Haley became the first JMU player to be drafted into the NFL when he was selected in the fourth round of the 1986 draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He went on to become the only player in league history to win five Super Bowls: two with the 49ers and three with the Dallas Cowboys. During his 12 seasons in the NFL, he was a two-time NFC Defensive Player of the Year, two-time First Team All-Pro and was selected to five Pro Bowls. He finished his professional career with 100.5 sacks, two interceptions, eight fumble recoveries and one defensive touchdown.
In August 2015, Haley was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the first JMU student-athlete in any major professional hall of fame. His A Football Life spot will highlight his upbringing in Gladys, Va., his success at both the college and pro levels and his retirement and ensuing mentorship of rookie football players.
Charles Haley: A Football Life will also re-air on Friday, November 20 at 9 p.m.
