SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
- George Mason fell to 4-6 this week after dropping a 73-65 decision at home on Tuesday, Dec. 8, against Northern Iowa. Last weekend saw Mason cruise to a 63-44 win over Penn in Fairfax.
- This will be the Patriot's fourth true road game of the season, following three trips that left them 0-3. Mason suffered losses at Mercer (69-60), Manhattan (69-67) and Towson (75-54) in the opening weeks, but took down Ole Miss (68-62) and Oklahoma State (71-68, OT) on neutral courts in the Gildan Charleston Classic.
- Five Mason players are averaging at least nine points per game, led by freshman guards Jaire Grayer and Otis Livingston, who are scoring 11.7 and 11.1 ppg, respectively.
SERIES HISTORY
- Saturday will mark the 91st meeting in this in-state rivalry, which dates back to a Jan. 12, 1970 contest and includes 64 games as conference foes in the CAA, a period spanning from the 1985-86 season until the team's last meetings in 2012-13.
- The Patriots have won nine straight games against the Dukes, dating back to a 68-66 JMU win in Harrisonburg on Feb. 7, 2009. Then-senior forward Kyle Swanston led the Dukes with 19 points in that victory.
- Senior guard Ron Curry is the only current Duke who has faced Mason in his career, as the then-freshman scored 11 points in Fairfax on Jan. 15, 2013 in a 68-57 loss.
LAST TIME OUT
- Junior guard Shakir Brown scored a career-high 30 points on Dec. 6 to lead James Madison to a 107-84 win over Marshall in non-conference men's basketball action at the JMU Convocation Center.
- The effort marked the second 100-point effort of the year for the Dukes, who moved to 7-3 with their fifth consecutive win.
- JMU scored 106 points in its Nov. 24 win over Eastern Mennonite, but Sunday afternoon's performance marked the first time the Dukes cleared the century mark against a Division I team since a 112-110 overtime loss at Seton Hall on Dec. 22, 2007. The 107 points were also JMU's most in regulation since a 111-77 win over Liberty on Dec. 2, 1998.
- Senior guard Ron Curry notched his second straight game with at least 20 points, scoring 20 exactly on 7-for-11 shooting while grabbing seven boards and tallying three assists. Junior forward Dimitrije Cabarkapa picked up 18 points on the strength of four three-pointers, while junior forward Tom Vodanovich posted his first double-double of the year (10p/10r).
