WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis was defeated 6-1 by William & Mary on Saturday morning as the Dukes dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-1 against Colonial Athletic Association foes.
Junior Robert Stirlingwent 2-0 on the day and notched the lone JMU point of the morning. Stirling battled back from a first-set loss (6-4) to Addison Appleby at No. 2 singles to tally a 6-3 win in set two and tie the match. He won the third-set tiebreaker 10-7 for the point.
Stirling also picked up a doubles win with teammate and fellow junior Maxi Branth. The junior duo defeated Scott Huang and Alec Miller 8-3 at No. 3 doubles, though the Tribe came away with the doubles point after wins at Nos. 1 and 2.
Sophomores Brett Moorheadand Alex Berdnikoffbattled to a tiebreaker against Addison Appleby and Damon Niquet at No. 2 doubles, but fell 8-7(4). Sophomores Miljan Ruzicand Sebastian Salinasdropped an 8-3 decision to Aaron Chaffee and Will Juggins at No. 1 doubles.
Salinas and Juggins met for the second time on Saturday at No. 1 singles, with Juggins edging Salinas 6-4, 6-3. Ruzic faced Niquet at No. 3 singles, falling 6-0, 6-1 while Branth took a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Huang at No. 4 singles.
Moorhead was defeated by Chaffee in two sets (6-3, 6-2) at No. 5 singles. Freshman Stephen Goldmansuffered a two-set setback (6-3, 6-0) to Miller at No. 6 singles.
JMU has a quick turnaround as the Dukes take on St. Bonaventure in a neutral-court match at Virginia Tech on Sunday, March 1. Match play begins at 9 a.m. in Blacksburg, Va.
