JMU Earns Second Straight 6-1 Victory with Win over Bucknell

SANLANDO PARK, Fla. – James Madison women's tennis earned its second consecutive 6-1 victory on Thursday as the Dukes downed Bucknell.

JMU improved to 7-3 on the year while the Bison dropped to 1-9 this spring.

The Dukes clinched the doubles point by picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Senior Taylor Pinchoff and sophomore Alex Huie opened with an 8-1 victory over Maria Cioffi and Michele Urbinati at the first position. An 8-2 win by sophomores Rachel Nelson and Emily Bradshaw over Alyssa McAndrew and Emilie Bush clinched the opening point for JMU, leaving freshman Kimmy Herrock and sophomore Rebecca Harris unfinished at No. 2 doubles (3-3).

Herrock quickly tallied her own win on the day, taking down Melissa Parks in straight 6-2 sets at No. 5 singles. Harris also got in the on the action, defeating Jorie Fox in two sets (6-3, 6-2) at No. 6 singles to give JMU a 3-0 lead.

Freshman Dylan Owens secured match point for Madison with a two-set win (6-4, 6-1) at No. 4 singles. A 6-1, 6-4 win by Huie over Stephanie Pino at No. 3 singles pushed the Dukes to a 5-0 advantage.

Pinchoff was the lone Duke to see a match go a full three sets, facing off with Cioffi at the No. 1 position. After falling in a set one tiebreaker (7-6(2)), the senior rattled off back-to-back wins in sets two (6-1) and three (10-7) to complete the come-from-behind victory and settle JMU's victory at 6-1.

"Today was another chance to improve, and we did that," Head Coach James Bryce stated. "Tomorrow will be a good test for us."

JMU wraps up its swing through Florida on Friday, March 13, as the Dukes face Evansville at 9:30 a.m. in Kissimmee.
