COLLEGE PARK, Md. – James Madison struck for three runs in the first inning and three players recorded multi-hit outings en route to a 6-2 Colonial Athletic Association softball victory against Towson on Sunday afternoon at the Maryland Softball Stadium.
Â
The Dukes improved to 22-6 on the season and 3-0 in CAA play and have won 13 consecutive games while the Tigers fell to 9-10 and 0-3. JMU produced the series sweep with Towson for the fourth straight year and have taken the last 16 games from TU.
Â
Sophomore shortstop
Niki Prince went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI's and a run while both junior first baseman
Jailyn Ford and junior left fielder
Hannah Hayes had 2-for-4 days. Hayes drove in two runs while both scored a run themselves.
Â
Freshman pitcher
Megan Good remained perfect on the season, improving to 12-0 after throwing a complete game, allowing two unearned runs and four hits, while striking out for TU batters. Missy McCormick took the defeat, dropping to 5-4 after conceding five runs (four earned) and five hits in just three innings.
Â
The Dukes jumped out early, scoring three in the top of the first. JMU quickly loaded the bases with just one out and a walk for sophomore center fielder
Taylor Newton allowed Prince to trot home for the game's first run. On the ensuing at-bat, Hayes singled through second base, scoring Good and Ford to put the Dukes ahead 3-0.
Â
JMU added two more tallies in the fourth, extending the lead to 5-0. After Hayes reached on a bunt single, freshman designated player
Jessica Mrozek singled to right and a fielding error in right field allowed Mrozek to reach third and have Hayes cross the plate. Three batters later junior catcher
Niki Prince singled through the left side, scoring pinch runner
Jade Fleming from third.
Â
Towson got both runs back in the bottom half, taking advantage of a pair of JMU errors. After Brook Miko led off the inning with a triple, she was able to score off a fielding error in left. Holiday Cahill later scored on a fielding blunder in the infield with two outs, to make it 5-2.
Â
JMU capped off the scoring in the sixth, utilizing back-to-back, extra-base hits with two outs. Sophomore right field fielder
Tahli Moore knocked a double to left field and Prince followed that up with her second double of the day to right field, to give JMU a four-run lead.
Â
The Dukes return to action on Wednesday, March 25, when they travel down to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a doubleheader against North Carolina.Â
