HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison baseball team fell in the opening game of this weekend's three-game series with College of Charleston, dropping a 12-0 decision to the Cougars on Friday night at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Dukes got just a pair of hits on the evening, as they fell to 10-12 (0-4 CAA) in 2015, while Charleston combined for 16 hits, including six for extra bases, to improve to 15-7 (4-0 CAA).
Redshirt junior shortstop Chad Carroll and junior catcher Bobby San Martin each had a single for the Dukes on the evening, as both players hit safely for the third consecutive game.
Charleston struck early, scoring six runs on eight hits in the first three innings to put JMU in a hole from the start. Carroll led off the bottom of the first with a single, using a groundout and a stolen base to move around to third, but would eventually be stranded there.
The Cougars scored five more in the sixth inning on six hits, including a three-run home run that started a run of five straight hits. JMU mounted their biggest threat in the bottom of the eighth, when sophomore pinch hitter Brett Johnson drew a five-pitch walk and San Martin followed him with a single through the right side, but Charleston escaped the inning with a strikeout and a flyout.
Junior Taylor Clarke had a dominant start for the Cougars to pick up the win and move to 5-1, working 6.1 innings and striking out 10 while allowing just one hit and walking none. Junior Aaron Hoover took the loss for JMU, yielding five earned runs in his 5.1 innings.
The Dukes will be back in action on Saturday, when they face the Cougars for the second game of the three-game series. First pitch, previously set for 6:30 p.m., has been moved to 3 p.m. at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park in an effort to avoid bad weather later in the evening.
