WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, West Virginia – Rain washed out the final round of the 2015 Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, leaving the James Madison golf team tied for fifth at The Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, April 13-14. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Bowling Green, was held at The Old White TPC Golf Course (Par 70 – 7,287 yards) in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
The teams took to the course and got in several holes before a one hour and 30 minute rain and lighthning delay. At that point, the course was deemed unplayable and called, with the scoring going back to the final scores from the first two rounds. In Monday's action, JMU opened strong in the morning, shooting a 1-over 281 and trailed No. 37 East Tennessee State by just one shot. However, the Dukes were unable to match it in the afternoon and shot a 14-over 294 to post a 15-over 575 to finish in a tie with Ohio. ETSU won the team title at 6-over 566, one shot ahead of Eastern Kentucky at 7-over 567. Marshall and Old Dominion tied for third at 11-over 571, followed by JMU and Ohio among the 13 teams in the field.
Sophomore Poom Pattaropong placed fourth after a pair of 1-under 69 scores for a two-round total of 2-under 138. Senior Jon Weiss tied for 21st at 5-over 145, while sophomore Ryan Cole and freshman Jack Floydd tied for 26th at 6-over 146, with Floydd posting a team-best 2-under 68 in the first round. Senior Trey Smith was the final counter for Madison in a tie for 56th at 14-over 154. Playing as an individual, redshirt-sophomore Tyler Williams tied for 61st at 16-over 156.
Three players tied for medalist honors, as ETSU's Gudmund Kristjansson, Jonathan Dilanni of Elon and Jared Brown of Eastern Kentucky tied at 3-under 137. Pattaropong finished one shot back and Adrian Meronk of ETSU was the only other player under par at 1-under 139.
JMU has now wrapped up the regular season schedule and will head to Southport, North Carolina for the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship, April 24-26. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at St. James Plantation Founders Club, with the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals going to the team champion.
