HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison University Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne on Wednesday announced the five individuals to be inducted as the 2015 Class into the JMU Athletics Hall of Fame. The honorees include wrestler Mike Coyle ('00), women's soccer's Jen Cuesta Putney ('97), cross country and track and field standout Mollie DeFrancesco Turner ('03, '06), baseball's Eddie Kim ('08) and swimmer Cynthia Ann Walker Marstellar ('94).
Among the group, four achieved All-America status, four earned the Colonial Athletic Association's highest honor as Athlete of the Year in their sport and four were named to the CAA's Silver Anniversary Teams announced in 2009-10.
The 2015 JMU Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Friday, November 20 in the Festival Conference & Student Center Grand Ballroom with a reception beginning at 6:15 p.m. with dinner and awards program to follow. Michael Coyle, WrestlingThe only JMU representative on the CAA's Silver Anniversary Team for wrestling, Coyle earned All-America status in 2000 and was named CAA Wrestling Athlete of the Year. He was a two-time CAA Champion, capturing titles in 1999 at 141 pounds and 2000 at 133 pounds. He posted a combined record of 49-15 over those two seasons, including a 15-3 mark in dual meets. That two-year ledger included eight major decisions, four technical falls, 22 falls and a 4-5 mark in NCAA Championship competition.
Jen Cuesta Putney, Women's SoccerOne of the top defenders in the 26-year history of the JMU women's soccer program, Cuesta was awarded All-America status in 2000 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and went on to compete in the Umbro Select Senior All-Star Game. She was a two-time All-CAA and All-State honoree and helped JMU to two NCAA Championship appearances. Cuesta started every game of her last three seasons and, while concentrating as a defender, finished her career with six goals and seven assists for 19 total points. Of her six career tallies, four were game-winning goals.
Mollie DeFrancesco Turner, Women's Track and Field & Cross CountryOne of the most decorated student-athletes in JMU's track and cross country history, DeFrancesco earned the distinction of becoming the first JMU student-athlete to earn three All-America honors in one year. She placed sixth in the 5,000-meter run at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships, fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships and 30
th at the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships. She was the third-ranked American woman in the steeplechase in 2002. DeFrancesco still holds JMU records in the outdoor 3,000 (9:24.08), outdoor 5,000 (16:03.97), steeplechase (9:56.07) and indoor 5,000 (16:22.64). She was CAA Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2002, a two-time JMU Female Athlete of the Year and was selected to the CAA Silver Anniversary Team.
Eddie Kim, BaseballA force in the heart of JMU's lineup from 2000 to 2003, Kim was a two-time All-America selection and two-time CAA Player of the Year. He still holds the best career batting average for the Dukes at .409 and ranks third all-time in slugging percentage (.676), second in on-base percentage (.489), second in RBIs (197), third in home runs (36), fifth in total bases (437), fifth in doubles (57) and seventh in hits (264). As part of a dominant 2002 season, Kim hit .421 with 99 hits, 74 RBIs, 24 doubles and 12 home runs. He helped to lead the 2002 squad to a school-record 44 wins, a CAA regular season title and an at-large berth to the NCAA Championship. In addition to his other accolades, Kim was named to the CAA's Silver Anniversary Team as one of the top 25 student-athletes in the league's first 25 years. He was a fourth-round draft pick by the Oakland Athletics in 2003 and played three seasons of professional baseball.
Cynthia Ann Walker Marsteller, Women's Swimming and DivingWalker was the CAA's Outstanding Swimmer at the championship meet in both 1992 and 1993, giving her the distinction of being the only JMU student-athlete to earn the honor. She was also named the league's Swimmer of the Year in 1993. She earned the highest possible point total at the CAA meet by capturing first in each of her events. Walker led the Dukes to the CAA Championship in 1993 and a runner-up finish in each of her first three seasons. She earned 14 CAA gold medals, including three-times in the 50-yard freestyle, twice in the 100 free, once in the 100 butterfly, three times in the 200-yard freestyle relay, three times in the 400-yard freestyle relay and once each in the 200 and 400 medley relays. At one time, she held eight JMU and seven CAA event records, including the JMU 100 fly mark that stood for 17 years.
The induction ceremony will also recognize former cross country and track and field student-athlete
Mike Fox, who was selected for induction in 2014 but unable to attend the ceremony. He was a two-time All-American in cross country in 1998 and 2001 and qualified for the 2001 NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
