WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary used a red-hot second half to erase James Madison's 12-point halftime lead and hand the Dukes a 68-62 defeat in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action on Sunday night at Kaplan Arena.
The loss, JMU's first on the road (7-1) and first when leading at halftime (13-1), dropped the Dukes to 16-7 (6-4 CAA) on the season. The Tribe improved to 15-6 (7-3 CAA) with the victory.
Senior guard
Ron Curry continued his run of stellar play, notching his 15th consecutive double-digit performance with 19 points while adding six rebounds. Junior guard
Shakir Brown joined him in double figures and tallied his fifth double-double of the year with a 13-point, 11-board evening.
The Dukes came out of the gate hot, running the lead up to 31-13 with 8:55 to play in the opening period, but W&M slowed the JMU offense in the final minutes of the half and the Dukes took a 12-point lead into the break at 38-26.
After halftime, the Tribe used a 17-2 run to erase the remainder of JMU's lead and take a 43-40 lead at the 12:38 mark. The Dukes would use a four-guard lineup to stem the tide and would take multiple leads, including a two-point advantage at 52-50 with 7:17 to play, but W&M went 9-for-10 from the free throw line across the final 4:53 to put the game away.
Daniel Dixon led the Tribe in scoring on the evening, pouring in 17 points on a 6-for-6 evening at the charity stripe. Omar Prewitt added 16 of his own, while Terry Tarpey chipped in 11.
QUOTING COACH BRADY"It was the tale of two halves, here. We played really well in the first half and the tables got turned on us. They played tremendously in the second half. I thought we had opportunities to finish some plays near the rim and we bobbled the ball out of bounds and we had too many turnovers, but this is a really good William & Mary team and they outplayed us in the second half."
