SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
- Elon sits at 10-5 (1-1 CAA) on the year after splitting a pair of home games with Northeastern (L, 86-79) and Drexel (W, 83-78) on the opening weekend of Colonial Athletic Association play.
- Though this will be Elon's first road game in conference play, the Phoenix have split six contests away from home, earning wins over Charlotte, FIU and UNC Asheville, while falling at #24 Michigan, Syracuse and #15 Duke.
- Six players average at least nine points per game for the high-powered Elon offense, led by 15.7 from senior guard Tanner Samson, a preseason Third Team All-CAA pick. Junior guard Luke Eddy and freshman guard Dainan Swoope join the senior in double figures with 10.7 ppg each.
SERIES HISTORY
- Thursday's game marks just the four meeting between the two teams, with the first meeting taking place in Harrisonburg during the 1975-76 campaign, before either team made the leap to Division I.
- JMU also swept both games last season, the Phoenix' first as a member of the CAA, winning a 75-72 contest at home before earning an 86-75 victory in Elon four weeks later.
- In that meeting, then-junior guard Ron Curry led the way with 27 points and the Dukes shot 60.9% (28-for-46) from the field as a team, including a remarkable 77.8% (14-for-18) clip in the second half to put the game away. Then-sophomore forward Yohanny Dalembert was just one rebound short of a double-double with 15 points and nine boards.
LAST TIME OUT
- Junior guard Jackson Kent posted the first double-double of his career to lead James Madison to a 73-63 victory over Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action on Jan. 2 at the Bob Carpenter Center.
- Kent poured in a season-high 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting, including a 4-for-7 mark from behind the arc, and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Dukes improved to 11-4 (1-1 CAA) on the season. The High Point, N.C., native's double-double made him the fifth different Duke to record at least one this season.
- Senior guard Ron Curry bounced back from a scoreless first half to rack up 17 points on a 5-for-8 performance after the break, as well as a 3-for-6 mark on three-pointers. The afternoon marked Curry's seventh consecutive double-digit scoring day and 13th of the year.
