HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne on Tuesday announced the addition of
Matthew Varnadoe to the JMU Athletics staff as Director of Compliance.
Â
"We are excited to bring Matthew on board to our compliance staff," Bourne said. "He brings extensive experience from different levels of NCAA Division I, which will add valuable perspective to our operation. Combine with [Assistant A.D.]
Stephen LaPorta, our compliance office is in great hands moving forward."
Â
In line with previous experience, Varnadoe will concentrate heavily on the recruiting process at JMU, including NCAA legislation related to camps and clinics. He will also assist with the eligibility process for student-athletes in all 18 sport programs.
Â
"I'm very excited to be joining the compliance office at JMU," Varnadoe said. "James Madison is an amazing academic institution and a great athletic department. This is an unbelievable opportunity for me and definitely a place I know that I can develop professionally and personally. I can't wait to start working with the coaches, staff and student-athletes. Go Dukes!"
Â
Most recently, Varnadoe served as a compliance assistant at the University of North Dakota, where he monitored a similar size portfolio to that of JMU with 19 sports, over 100 coaches and staff members and 450 student-athletes. He was heavily involved in the recruiting process and coordinated the department's ACS system, the database used to track current and prospective student-athletes. He also provided educational materials on NCAA eligibility and other regulatory updates and policies.
Â
Prior to UND, Varnadoe also worked both in the compliance office and the athletics administration office at the University of Miami. He worked on updating and enhancing the department's compliance manual and assisted with the process of monitoring the department's sport programs.
Â
"I am extremely excited to bring
Matthew Varnadoe on board to be our director of compliance," LaPorta said. "Not only does he bring experience to the JMU compliance office, but he is hard worker that is dedicated to supporting our student-athletes and coaches. He has proven to be someone who is willing to work with our constituents while maintaining the highest level of integrity, which is key in helping to protect our university. I believe his personality will fit well with the culture that we have built at JMU, and we are fortunate to have him join our team."
Â
Varnadoe is a 2013 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Limestone College in physical education while also competing as a pitcher for the NCAA Division II baseball program. He went on to earn his master's degree Cum Laude from Miami in 2014 while studying sport administration.
