HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman forward Tim Estermannscored his first collegiate goal in the 109th minute to lift James Madison men's soccer to a 2-1 win over in-state rival Longwood on Wednesday night at Sentara Park.
The sequence started when freshman midfielder Fernando Caserowon a tackle in the defensive third and sprung freshman midfielder Manuel Ferriolon the counter-attack. Ferriol found freshman forward Niclas Mohron the left wing, who sent a cross into the box. Junior forward Joe Vynergot a touch in the middle of a scramble, setting up Estermann for the finish.
Estermann was crucial in setting up JMU's first goal of the night, drawing a penalty kick when he was taken down in the box after a through ball from Ferriol. Sophomore forward Aaron Ward-Baptistestepped up to the spot in the 72nd minute and placed a finish to the goalkeeper's right, his second goal of the season.
The Lancers went down to ten men in the 93rd minute when Eoin O'Donovan was shown a red card for a reckless tackle.
The Dukes entered the halftime break trailing 1-0 after Longwood's Max Poelker scored a left-footed strike in the 42nd minute, one of only two shots on goal for the Lancers on the evening.
JMU improved to 2-9-3 on the season while Longwood fell to 5-9-1 overall.

DUKE DEBUTS
JMU got valuable contributions from a collection of new faces on Wednesday night. Spaniards Fernando Caseroand Manuel Ferriolstarted for the first time in their collegiate careers, with Casero making his first career appearance. Sophomore defender Marian Gerlitzkisaw his first action of the season, playing the last 32 minutes of the game.
BATTLING IT OUT
The match was a physical contest, with the Dukes and Lancers committing 14 and 20 fouls, respectively. In addition to O'Donovan's red card, Longwood was shown three yellow cards compared to two cautions for JMU.
