HARRISONBURG, Va. – For the first time this season two Dukes recorded double-doubles, but the College of Charleston topped James Madison volleyball, 3-1 (26-25, 23-25, 18-25, 19-25), Sunday afternoon inside Sinclair Gym.
The Dukes fell to 11-8 overall and 3-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while Charleston improved to 12-6 and 5-1 in league action.
Freshman Sarah Martinand sophomore Tilbe Yaglioglueach recorded double-doubles in Sunday's contest as Martin tallied 24 assists and 10 digs, while Yaglioglu added 25 assists and 10 digs. Senior right side hitter Janey Goodmanheaded the Duke offense with 14 kills, while defensively adding six blocks. Senior outside hitter Kate Whitmireand freshman outside hitter Briley Brind'Amourchipped in 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
For the second consecutive match, junior libero Taylor Austintallied 20 or more digs as the Ashburn, Va. native racked up 23 against the Cougars to lead the JMU defense. The Dukes racked up double-digit blocks for the fourth straight contest with 11 total. Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Gail led JMU at the net with a season-high seven blocks.
The Cougars opened the first set tallying five of the first seven points before extending its lead by as much as five, 15-10, at the midway point. Using kills from Whitmire and senior middle blocker Kelly Robertson, JMU battled back to tie the set at 19-all. With the set tied at 24-24, Goodman and Gail combined for back-to-back block assists to give JMU the set victory and early advantage in the match.
Set two featured seven ties as James Madison and Charleston matched each other point for point throughout the set. With the set locked at 23-all, Maddie Hills tallied a block and kill to give the Cougars the set victory and even the match at the break.
Charleston tallied the first point of the third set and never relinquished its lead, topping the Dukes, 25-18, to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. James Madison rallied back in the fourth set fighting from behind to lock the set up at 17-all. Charleston used a 5-0 run late to pull ahead before two straight kills from Kennedy Madison secured the match in favor of the Cougars.

"Charleston is a really good team. Our conference is really strong this year. If we want to beat teams in our conference, we have to bring it. I don't think we executed at key points. I didn't think we played very well today, and hats off to Charleston for putting us in that position."
AUSTIN REWRITES THE RECORD BOOK
Tallying 20 or more digs in two consecutive matches, junior Taylor Austintallied her 1,217th career dig, becoming just one of five Dukes to ever record 1,200 or more career digs. The Ashburn, Va. native now ranks fourth all-time on JMU digs chart. Katie Daorai (2010-2013) holds third place all-time with 1,249 career digs.
BLOCK PARTY CONTINUES
For the fourth consecutive match, JMU has tallied double-digit blocks as the Dukes tallied 11.0 total against the Cougars. The Dukes are out-blocking opponents 160.5 to 97.5 this season and are averaging 2.43 blocks per set. Recording a season-best seven kills against Charleston, Taylor Gail paces the Dukes with 72.0 total blocks, averaging 1.18 per set.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE DUO
Setters Sarah Martinand Tilbe Yaglioglubecame the first Duke duo to record double-doubles in a match this season. With 24 assists and 10 digs against Charleston, Martin garnered her team-leading fourth double-double of the season, while Yaglioglu racked up her second consecutive double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs. The Hamm, Germany native tallied career-highs in assists (31) and digs (12) against UNCW on Friday evening.

James Madison continues conference play next weekend with a two-match road swing, beginning on Friday, Oct. 14 when the Dukes face Towson at 7 p.m. JMU closes its road trip on Sunday, Oct. 16 with a 1 p.m. contest at Delaware. The Dukes return to Godwin Hal on Thursday, Oct. 20 when JMU hosts Northeastern at 7 p.m.
