HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison trimmed a 13-point first-half deficit to four points late in the second half on Monday night, but the Dukes' comeback fell just short in a 67-56 loss to Texas Southern in non-conference men's basketball action at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes (0-4) used an 8-0 run from the 6:09 mark to the 2:52 mark of the second half to slice a 56-44 Tigers (4-1) advantage to 56-52, but five straight points from TSU put the contest out of reach across the final two minutes.
Senior forward
Yohanny Dalembert posted his first double-digit performance of the season, tallying 10 points and six rebounds on the strength of a 3-for-6 performance from the field and a 4-for-4 night at the line. Senior guard
Jackson Kent added nine points of his own, while junior
Ramone Snowden and seniors
Tom Vodanovich and
Paulius Satkus all chipped in eight points each.
Dulani Robinson paced Texas Southern on the evening, going 3-for-6 from behind the arc en route to 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Zach Lofton tallied 16 points of his own, while Derrick Griffin posted a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.
JMU rebounded from a first half that saw it shoot 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) from the field, as the Dukes went 10-of-22 (45.5 percent), including 3-of-8 (37.5 percent) from the three-point line after the break.
QUOTING COACH ROWE
"It's been a thing for us, where one stretch at a key time swings the game for us and we need to get more consistent at those key moments. I'm proud of these guys for battling; we just need to get past that last bump."
CONSISTENCY ON THE BOARDS
The Dukes outrebounded Texas Southern by a 38-35 margin on Monday night, marking the fourth time in as many contests in which JMU has won the rebounding battle. All nine JMU players that saw time against the Tigers pulled down at least two rebounds, paced by six apiece from seniors
Yohanny Dalembert and
Tom Vodanovich.
