QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's (8-3) closed the game on a 29-9 run to sink James Madison women's basketball (5-4) 74-63 on Wednesday morning.
Redshirt senior guard Precious Hallled all scorers with 22 points while freshman guard Kamiah Smalls finished with 12 as the Dukes shot 38.2 percent for the game. SJU saw four players reach double figures as the Red Storm shot 44.4 percent for the contest and went 23-for-25 from the free throw line.
St. John's won the battle of the boards 36-30 and outscored JMU 22-16 on second-chance points.
After trailing by nine in the first quarter, the Dukes put together a 12-2 run to start the second frame and take their first lead of the day. The stretch was part of a longer 32-13 run across the quarters that sent JMU into halftime with a 10-point lead.
A tense third quarter followed before the Red Storm put together a 16-6 stretch in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good. The Dukes missed their last nine field goal attempts.
TURNOVER BATTLE
After the first two quarters, JMU had forced St. John's into five more turnovers (15-10) and capitalized for a 20-5 advantage in points off those giveaways. In the second half, however, the Red Storm turned the ball over just three times compared to the Dukes' seven. SJU limited JMU to just four points off turnovers during the final 20 minutes of play.
A LOOK AT THE RECORD BOOK
Hall finished the day with 22 points, pushing her career total to 1,729 points. She is 32 points away from fourth on JMU's all-time scoring chart, which is held by Meredith Alexis ('03-07) at 1,760 career points.
DOUBLING DOWN
Hall has scored in double figures each of the first nine games of the season and eclipsed 20 points six different times. Smalls has finished a contest in double figures six times in her first campaign.
