TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The second round of the Florida State Match-Up saw improvement from the James Madison women's golf team, led by sophomores Maddisen Cox and Laura Gomez-Ruiz, on Saturday at the Par 72 Don Veller Seminole Golf Course.
Cox (+9, T-36th) carded a team-best 75 to move up eight spots in the round, aided by three birdies, including one on the final hole of her round. Gomez-Ruiz (+14, T-55th) also rose two spots up the leaderboard after shooting a six-over (78) on the day.
The Dukes matched yesterday's score at 30-over par and currently sit in 12th as a team. Eight teams competing in the tournament hold a national ranking with all eight in the top 44 around the country. South Carolina heads up the team leaderboard after shooting a combined three-under par in round two.
Also playing for JMU are senior Kelsey Solan (+17, T-58th), freshman Jordan McKelvin (+20, 67th) and freshman Carley Cox (+22, 68th), who shaved four strokes off of yesterday's score.
Texas A&M's Maddie Szeryk maintained her individual lead after shooting a 3-under par yesterday and shooting par to the course today.
QUOTING COACH "It has been a difficult couple of days," said head coach Sarah Sargent. "Some of the bad shots are expected given the bad weather we have had recently. I am hoping we can go out tomorrow and improve on our last couple of rounds and learn for the next tournament."
