GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Headed up by the duo of freshman
Alex Henderson and junior
Ryan Cole, James Madison men's golf sits in fourth out of 17 teams after the first round of the 2016 Loyola Intercollegiate at the Par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course.
Henderson and Cole matched each other with a 4-under 68 in the round thanks to five birdies and a bogey each and are currently tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard after starting their day on the front nine.
Also impressing on the day were teammates
Jack Floydd (-2, T-21st) and junior
Poom Pattaropong (E, T-38th) out of the field of 104 golfers.
Rounding out the Dukes competing for the team was redshirt sophomore
Shota Ozaki (+4, T-82nd), who fell behind due to a triple bogey on the 18th hole.
Indiana holds the top spot after carding a 271 as a unit, and Connecticut's Zach Zabock sits atop the individual leaderboards heading into the second day after shooting a seven-under par 65.
Playing as individuals on the day for the Dukes were sophomore
Matt Cowgill (-3, T-14th), redshirt junior
Connor Walters (+2, T-63rd) and senior
Chris Kapsak (+4, T-82nd). Cowgill, who was competing for JMU for the first time after transferring in from North Texas, played well on the strength of five birdies and an eagle on the 11th hole.
The Dukes return to action tomorrow morning for the second round of the Loyola Intercollegiate.
