JMU Jumps Into Second At Loyola Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - With the course playing more difficult than in the first round, the James Madison men's golf team was one of only four teams to stay under par on the day and moved into second place after the second round of the 2016 Loyola Intercollegiate at the Par 72 Palm Valley Golf Course.
Junior Ryan Cole (-5, T-9th) and freshman Alex Henderson (-5, T-9th) once again kept pace with each other, carding one-under par 71s on Monday to lead the Dukes.
Making the biggest improvements on the day were junior Poom Pattaropong (-3, T-15th) and redshirt freshman Shota Ozaki (+5, T-60th), who both shaved three strokes off of their first round scores. Pattaropong made one of the biggest jumps of any golfer in the field of 104, surging 23 spots up the individual leaderboard behind four birdies over his final eight holes.
Sophomore Jack Floydd (E, T-27th) rounded out the group with a two-over par 74 in the round.
The Arkansas State Red Wolves head into the third and final round with a slim two-stroke lead over the Dukes. The Red Wolves boast two of the top three individuals in the tournament with Tanner Napier (-10) in first place and Seth Garner (-8) in third.
Also representing James Madison, but competing as individuals, were sophomore Matt Cowgill (-6, T-5th), redshirt junior Connor Walters (+5, T-60th) and senior Chris Kapsak (+9, T-86th). Cowgill's impressive first tournament with JMU continued today with his second consecutive 69, giving him the best showing of any individual golfer thus far in the tournament.
Round three kicks off tomorrow morning in Goodyear, Ariz. The Dukes are working to earn their third trophy of the 2015-16 campaign.
