- Top-seeded James Madison enters the CAA championship game coming off a 68-47 win over No. 5 Delaware while No. 2 Drexel is coming off a 58-45 victory over sixth-seeded Northeasterng in the semifinals Friday afternoon.
- The Dukes are 4-3 in championship games under Head Coach Kenny Brooks, including wins in the last two CAA finals. This marks only the second-ever championship battle between Drexel and James Madison, with the Dragons coming away with the title in 2009.
- JMU never trailed against Delaware in a contest that last saw a tie at the 6:31 mark in the first quarter. The Dukes drained 10 three-pointers (10-24) for a 41.7 shooting percentage while the Blue Hens were silent from behind the arc, going 0-for-7, for the second straight meeting between the two programs.
- Senior guard Angela Mickens led the Dukes with 12 assists, tying her season best, against the Blue Hens while redshirt senior guard Jazmon Gwathmey lead all scorers with 25 points. Freshman Aneah Young contributed a career-best eight points.Â
- JMU holds a 20-11 advantage over Drexel in the all-time series, including this year's regular season wins on Feb. 12 (59-55) and Jan. 15 (67-56).
- JMU took home three of the major conference honors in 2016, as Head Coach Kenny Brooks was named Coach of the Year for the third time in a row, redshirt senior guard Jazmon Gwathmey was named Player of the Year and freshman Kayla Cooper-Williams was named Rookie of the Year. Gwathmey and Cooper-Williams were also named to the CAA All-Defensive team while senior guard Angela Mickens was tabbed to the First Team All-CAA alongside Gwathmey.Â
- Rookie of the Year Cooper-Williams is just two blocks shy (65) of breaking the JMU single-season record of 66 that was set by Lauren Whitehurst in 2011-2012.
- Mickens is just 12 assists shy (659) of breaking the JMU career assists record of 670 that was set by Jess Cichowicz.
RULES CHANGES
- FORMAT:Â Instead of two 20-minute halves, women's basketball games will now have four 10-minute periods with an intermission between the first and second periods and the third and fourth periods as well as a 15-minute halftime intermission.
- FOULS:Â A player will be awarded two free throws for each common foul committed by a team starting with the fifth team foul in each period - there are no more 1-and-1 situations. Team foul counts will reset at the beginning of each period.
- TEAM-CALLED TIMEOUTS:Â Each team will have four timeouts to be used during the course of the game (three 30-second timeouts and one full 60-second timeout). Three timeouts carry over to the second half; if no timeout is taken in the first half, a team loses one 30-second timeout. If the game goes past regulation, one 30-second timeout is awarded for each extra period, plus the remaining second-half timeouts.
- MEDIA TIMEOUTS (2:45 in length):Â There will be seven media timeouts during regulation time: three prior to halftime and four after halftime. The intermission between the first and second periods as well as the intermission between the third and fourth periods will count as media timeouts. Each period will have one media timeout at either the first team-called timeout of the period OR the first dead ball at or below the five-minute mark. A floating media timeout will take place during either the third or fourth period at the first team-called timeout. This will not eliminate the set media timeout of that period.
