JMU Storms Back for 4-3 Victory at College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Trailing 3-0, James Madison women's tennis went to work and rattled off four straight singles victories to clinch match point and the 4-3 win over College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association action.

The come-from-behind victory started with sophomore Kimmy Herrock's hard-fought win over Brooke McAmis at No. 3 singles, defeating the Cougar in straight 7-5 sets to put the first point of the day on the board for JMU and holding off match point for CofC.

Junior Rebecca Harris followed at the No. 6 slot with a three-set win (7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-3) over Sarah Jane Jones to put the Dukes within one for the first time since doubles action. Freshman Emma Petersen carried the momentum into her No. 5 singles match against Helena Nyikos, going a full three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-2) to earn the point and knot the match at 3-all.

The decisive match point came from junior Timea Guibe at No. 2 singles. She took an early lead with a 6-3 set-one win, but Katherine Schofield tied it up with her own 6-3 win in set two. The pair battled before Guibe pulled away for the 6-3 victory in set three and completing the comeback for the Dukes.

JMU moved to 9-4 this season with a 2-0 mark in CAA action while College of Charleston dropped to 12-7 with a 1-1 record in league play.

The Dukes remain on the road on Sunday, March 20, as they head up to UNCW for a 2 p.m. match.

"The win today was what this team has been working towards for the last eight months. All the time on the court, in the gym and on the track has finally paid off. We put ourselves in a tough hole to climb out of today, being down 3-0. Everyone believed in themselves and each other, though, which ultimately led to our success in the end. We played with heart, and we played for each other. I believe that is what tipped the scales for us. College of Charleston is a very tough team and the Cougars battled us on every court until the very last point. They have great poise and sportsmanship, and we always enjoy the opportunity to play them."

CAA FUN FACTS

This is the first win for JMU over College of Charleston as league foes.
This is the first 2-0 start in league play for the Dukes in the last 10 years.

UP NEXT
JMU plays its final CAA road match of the regular season tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at UNCW. The Dukes will then return home for a five-match home stretch that starts March 25 at 2:30 p.m. against Radford and includes league bouts against Delaware (March 29) and Elon (April 2).
