RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond used a six-run eighth inning to pull away from James Madison and saddle the Dukes with an 8-1 non-conference loss on Tuesday evening at Pitt Field.
Â
JMU fell to 11-14 on the season with the loss, despite yielding just eight hits on the evening, the lowest total for an opponent since March 18 vs. St. Bonaventure. Richmond improved to 14-11 with the win.
Â
Freshman right-hander
Daniel Pinson worked three solid innings in his fourth start of the season, yielding just a pair of hits, while senior
Mark Gunst followed him with two shutout innings, striking out three.
Â
Junior left fielder
Ky Parrott had the only RBI for the Dukes when he pulled a first-pitch single through the right side in the top of the second inning, giving JMU a 1-0 lead. However, the Spiders levelled things in the bottom half of the frame.
Â
Richmond went ahead on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, before using two hits, two JMU errors, four walks and three hit-by-pitches in a lengthy eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
Â
In addition to Parrott, junior first baseman
Brett Johnson, sophomore right fielder
Adam Sisk and sophomore shortstop
Tanner Dofflemyer all collected singles for JMU, while Sisk added his sixth stolen base of the season. The Dukes pushed a runner into scoring position in five of the nine frames, but left eight runners on base on the evening.
Â
Richmond starter Matt Olson kept the Dukes off-balance, giving up just four hits across six frames and striking out three. Daniel Brumbaugh did not allow a hit, though he walked four, across the final three innings to earn his second save of the season.
Â
Kyle Adams and Kurtis Brown each notched two hits to pace the Spider offense.
Â
QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY"This was a really good midweek baseball game until the eighth inning. Give credit to Richmond's starter; he kept us off balance all day. We started having some better at-bats as the game went on, but unfortunately, we just didn't quite take advantage and got ourselves in too big of a hole there."
Â
UP NEXTThe Dukes will continue their CAA slate this coming weekend with a trip to Newark, Del., to face Delaware on Friday-Sunday, April 1-3. The Blue Hens have lost four straight after being swept at College of Charleston last weekend and dropping a 16-7 decision at Lehigh on Tuesday night.
