HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game on Tuesday night, but Maryland plated seven in the top of the 10th to hand the Dukes a 19-12 loss in non-conference baseball action at Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The two teams battled through a 1-hour, 57-minute weather delay, the Dukes' second lengthy delay in the last five days, which waylaid the contest in the top of the sixth inning. JMU dropped to 17-24 in the loss while the Terrapins improved to 22-18 on the evening.
Â
Sophomore second baseman
Bradley McKay paced a JMU offense that rapped out 14 hits on the evening, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two more driven in. Senior first baseman
Kyle Weston drove in four runs for the Dukes on a 2-for-4 night, while senior shortstop
Chad Carroll added three RBIs in his own 2-for-4 performance.
Â
Junior left fielder
Ky Parrott and sophomore third baseman
Tanner Dofflemyer each tallied two hits of their own, while sophomore right fielder
Adam Sisk blasted his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to lead off the fourth inning.
Â
The two teams exchanged blows throughout the early stages of the game, with the Dukes taking a 9-7 lead into the fifth. Maryland took a 12-9 lead with five runs on either side of the weather delay in the top of the sixth, but JMU battled back, eventually tying it with two outs in the ninth on Weston's two-RBI double.
Â
Maryland would plate seven runs in the top of the next frame, however, putting things out of reach on two hits, four walks, an error and a hit-by-pitch.
Â
Eight different JMU pitchers saw time on the mound for the Dukes, with sophomore
Christian Bourne taking the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year.
Â
Shortstop Kevin Smith tallied a staggering seven RBIs on the evening, with the help of a second-inning grand slam, to lead the Terps offensively, while Andrew Green picked up the win after five complete innings of relief.
