NEWARK, Del. - James Madison exploded for 17 hits and fended off a furious Delaware rally on Sunday afternoon, holding on to claim a 14-12 victory in the decisive third game of this weekend's Colonial Athletic Association series at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Â
The Dukes, who set a new season-high in runs and matched their high in hits, claimed their second CAA series in as many weekends with the victory, improving to 13-15 (4-2 CAA) on the season. Delaware fell to 17-11 (1-5 CAA) in the loss.
Â
Junior catcher
Zach Tondi filled the stat sheet for the Dukes, going 3-for-6 on the afternoon with three runs and three RBIs, after opening JMU's scoring with a two-run homer to right-center in the top of the second. The homer marked Tondi's second of the season, fourth-most on the team.
Â
Junior first baseman
Brett Johnson and sophomore right fielder
Adam Sisk each added three hits of their own on Sunday, with Sisk scoring three runs and stealing a base. Senior third baseman
Kyle Weston and sophomore center fielder
Mike Sciorra each added two hits, while junior left fielder
Ky Parrott spent much of the afternoon on the basepaths after a 1-for-3 day that saw him walk three times and draw a hit-by-pitch.
Â
After Tondi's homer in the second, the Dukes kept rolling, with sophomore shortstop
Tanner Dofflemyer doubling Sisk home later in the inning and Johnson capping the scoring with a bases-loaded single that brought Parrott and Dofflemyer home.
Â
After Delaware whittled the lead down to one with four runs across the next three frames, JMU increased its lead in each of the next four innings, scoring three times in the fifth and twice in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Â
Sophomore second baseman
Kyle McPherson's RBI triple and Tondi's ensuing RBI single in the eighth would prove crucial, as the Blue Hens would score eight runs across the final three innings to put the pressure on the Dukes before JMU closed things out to secure the two-run win.
Â
Freshman right-hander
Christian Leckert was credited with the win after 2 1/3 innings of relief that saw him strike out two and yield just one earned run, moving him to 3-0 on the season. Junior lefty
Michael Evans picked up his third save in as many appearances after entering the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
Second baseman Nick Tierno tallied three hits for the second game in a row to pace the Delaware offense, which produced 16 hits of its own. Five other players picked up two hits each, while first baseman Nick Patten drove in a team-best three runs.
Â
Delaware starter Burk FitzPatrick was saddled with the loss and fell to 0-3 on the year after surrendering the five runs in the top of the second, though only Kevin Milley, the last of five Blue Hen pitchers on the day, did not give up at least one run.
Â
QUOTING COACH IKENBERRY"I was proud of the way we kept extending the lead today. We did a lot of good things on the field in some adverse conditions. Withers, Leckert, Garner and Evans all battled for us; we knew that getting 27 outs was going to be interesting with the way that game was going."
Â
EXTRA-BASE WEEKENDThe Dukes, already among the top 50 in the country for doubles and triples, kept their slugging percentage high over the three-game series at Delaware, with 16 of their 34 hits over the weekend going for extra bases. In all, JMU pounded out nine doubles, four triples and a trio of home runs to go with 18 singles as the Dukes' team slugging percentage climbed from .415 to .433.
Â
UP NEXTThe Dukes will stay on the road for four more games this week, starting with a 4 p.m. matchup at Maryland on Wednesday, April 6. The Terrapins are 14-14 this season after dropping two of three to High Point this weekend.
Â
Next weekend, JMU will continue its CAA slate with a three-game set at Towson on Friday-Sunday, April 8-10. The Tigers won two of three over Hofstra this past weekend to improve to 11-17 (2-1 CAA) on the season and sit in sixth place in the league.
