HARRISONBURG, Va. – After outlasting a pair of rain delays, top-seeded No. 7 James Madison defeated fifth-seeded Delaware 2-0 in the Dukes' first game of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Tournament on Wednesday, May 11 at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Dukes secured their spot in the winners bracket and face No. 2 Towson in game five at noon on Thursday, May 12.
Senior pitcher Jailyn Ford led the way with a three-hit performance in the circle and a RBI in the first inning. In the circle, she held the Blue Hens hitless through three complete innings holding the 1-0 lead she lifted JMU to with a triple off the left-center wall in the bottom of the first frame.
Senior Hannah Hayes tacked on another run in the fourth with a single to right field, bringing in junior Tahli Moore was pinch running for the leadoff hitter, sophomore designated hitter Jessica Mrozek.
In the sixth, James Madison worked out of a runners on first and third situation before retiring the Blue Hens in order in the seventh to secure the tournament victory.
RAINY AFTERNOON
The Dukes and Blue Hens were forced to sit out a combined 123 minutes on the afternoon due to weather.
Bridging the time around the first delay, Ford tossed a perfect nine-strike inning in the fifth, with the first strike coming prior to a 75 minutes weather delay.
CAREER CHARTS
Ford now owns the all-time runs batter in record with 153 after passing current teammate Erica Field with 152.
With a 16-2 record, Ford is now tied for ninth on the all-time single seasons wins list, alongside her 16-5 record in 2015.
