HARRISONBURG, Va. – Florien Sondern and Lisa Lejeune have signed National Letters of Intent to play field hockey at James Madison this fall, Head Coach Christy Morgan announced Friday.
Florien Sondern | M/D Almere, The Netherlands
Sondern is a midfielder/defender from The Netherlands. She attended Helen Parkhurst High School and played her club field hockey for Almeerse Hockey Club. Over the past two seasons, Sondern has been a member of the First Ladies team, which competed in the First Class competition in the Netherlands. During the 2014-15 season, she led the team to the First Class Championship. She was also a member of the A1 Junior team that competed at the Super A level for both the outdoor and indoor seasons.
"Florien is a powerful player who plays with great skill and determination," Morgan said. "She has a commanding defensive presence and will add strength in the backfield and to our set plays on both attack and defense."
Lisa Lejeune | F/M | 5-9 The Hague, The Netherlands
Lejeune is an attacker/midfielder, also from The Netherlands. Over the last year, she has trained with Club HGC as a part of the Dutch club system, competing at the highest levels possible with both the First Ladies Team and Under-18 Girls A Team. She is one of the leading goal scorers for both squads that are comprised of some of the top women's players in Europe and participated in trials for The Netherlands Under-18 National Team. Her mother, Helen Lejeune, and aunts, Lisanne Lejeune and Florentine Steenberghe, were members of The Netherlands' 1990 World Champion squad, and all three competed in the Olympics.
"Lisa is a dynamic attacking player that can create momentum in the midfield and finish in the attacking end thanks to her speed and versatility, which will fit well with the high intensity style we play at JMU," Morgan added. "She comes from a family of elite level field hockey players, as her mother played on the Dutch national team in the 80's. I was fortunate to play against her and get to know her as a person and as a player - Lisa is following in her mother's footsteps, defined by great character and work ethic."
