RICHMOND, Va. - James Madison opened the scoring on Friday evening, but Richmond got a program record-tying four goals from junior Lexi Prillaman to hand the Dukes a 4-1 loss in non-conference women's soccer action at Robins Stadium.
Â
The loss dropped JMU to 0-3, while the Spiders improved to 2-1.
Â
JMU senior forward Ashley Herndon opened her 2016 scoring account in the 16th minute, giving the Dukes a 1-0 lead when she buried a rebound after freshman forward Haley Crawford hit the post.
Â
Crawford finished her own chance in the 76th minute, cutting the Richmond lead to 3-2 on an unassisted goal. In her first three collegiate contests, Crawford has a team-best two goals on just six shots and an assist.
Â
Prillaman split her goals between the halves, scoring a penalty kick in the 26th minute and giving Richmond the lead in the 39th, before doubling the Spiders' lead in the 49th and putting the match out of reach in the 77th, less than a minute after Crawford had cut UR's lead to one.
Â
JMU goalkeeper Olivia Miller tallied a career-high 11 saves, as the Spiders racked up 15 shots on goal, including six from Prillaman. The Dukes forced five saves out of Richmond goalkeeper Katie Brennan.
Â
Richmond outshot the Dukes, 22-16, on the strength of an 11-4 advantage after halftime.
Â
QUOTING COACH LOMBARDO
"[Lexi] Prillaman was a handful tonight. We didn't have any answers for her dynamic style of play. Richmond is a very good team and fought hard to get the win. We are going through some growing pains right now, but if we keep our wits about us and stay positive, we'll come through this rough patch as a stronger team."
Â
UP NEXT
The Dukes return home for a bout against another state foe, as No. 18 Virginia Tech comes to Harrisonburg to face JMU at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 28. JMU holds a 6-2-0 advantage over the Hokies at home, but Tech has won the previous two meetings in Harrisonburg.
