RICHMOND, Va. - The James Madison men's golf team fired its second consecutive round of 9-under 279 to take home runner-up honors at the Janney VCU Invitational at the par-72, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek Course at the Country Club of Virginia on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Senior
Ryan Cole just missed his first individual medalist honors of the season, tying for first place in the 81-player field at 10-under 134, but falling on the sixth hole of a thrilling sudden-death playoff when Joey Lane of Virginia Tech posted a birdie to Cole's par.
Â
Cole posted a round of 4-under 68 on Tuesday afternoon to close out the event with a new 36-hole career low, besting his previous mark by 10 strokes. He earned his fourth top-two finish in his last six events, a stretch that includes last season's NCAA Franklin Regional and NCAA National Championships.
Â
As a team, the Dukes' second straight round of 9-under 279 put them at 18-under 558 for the rain-shortened tournament, just 10 strokes back of first-place Virginia Tech and two ahead of third-place East Carolina in the 14-team field.
Â
Sophomore
Alex Henderson climbed eight spots into a tie for 16th with a bogey-free round of 4-under 68 on Tuesday afternoon, finishing at 4-under 140 and marking his fourth round of par or better across the first two tournaments. Fellow sophomore
Shota Ozaki continued his own run of solid play, joining Cole as the only Dukes with five par-or-better rounds this season with an even-par 72 that tied him for 18th at 3-under 141.
Â
Junior
Matt Cowgill posted a 1-under 71 to finish tied for 26th (-1, 143) on the week, while senior
Poom Pattaropong fired an even-par 72 to close out the Dukes' competitors and finish tied for 40th (+3, 147).
Â
Pattaropong's round meant that all five JMU players posted a round of par or better for the first time this season and the first time since the 2015 Golfweek Program Challenge, held Sept. 6-8, 2015.

QUOTING COACH FORBES
"Overall, this was a good tournament for us, we just couldn't quite make enough birdies at the end to catch Virginia Tech. This was another great finish for Ryan, who is picking up right where he left off last season."
