First-Half Goals Sink JMU in 3-0 Loss to William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Three first-half goals by William & Mary sunk James Madison women's soccer in a 3-0 loss on Friday night at Martin Family Stadium in the first Colonial Athletic Association match of the season for both teams.
JMU fell to 3-7-0 on the year, while William & Mary improved to 7-3-0.
The Dukes were a threat to score all evening, holding a 22-10 advantage in shots including a 15-3 edge in the second half. Tribe goalkeepers Samantha Johnson and Katelyn Briguglio combined for 13 saves to shut out JMU.
Charlotte Hyland opened the scoring for William & Mary in the seventh minute, then assisted on Sarah Segan's 14th-minute goal to make it 2-0. Sami Grasso added a third Tribe goal in the 26th minute.
In addition to forcing 13 saves, the Dukes hit the woodwork multiple times. Right after William & Mary's second goal, sophomore forward Steffi Page nearly pulled one back for the Dukes when she rang the crossbar with a shot. Junior forward Colleen Gawkins had the best scoring opportunity of the night when she cut in from the right wing in the 71st minute and fired a shot off the far left post.
FIRING SQUAD
JMU registered shots from 10 different players on Friday night, led by Page's seven shots and senior forward Ashley Herndon's three shots on goal.

The Dukes continue their CAA road trip on Sunday, Sept. 25, playing at Elon at 1 p.m. The Phoenix are 5-4-1 on the year.
