LYNCHBURG, Va. - James Madison put together one of its most complete matches of the season on Sunday afternoon, but a late goal gave Liberty a 1-0 victory over the Dukes in non-conference women's soccer action at Osborne Stadium.
Â
The Dukes, who dropped to 1-5, racked up 17 shots and 10 shots on goal, while limiting Liberty (2-3) to just eight attempts. JMU's shots on goal marked the highest total for the Dukes since a 1-0 win over Elon on Oct. 26, 2014.
Â
JMU forced 10 saves from Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord, while sophomore goalkeeper
Olivia Miller tallied four for the Dukes. Senior forward
Ashley Herndon paced the JMU offense with a match-high six shots, including three on frame.
Â
Gabrielle Farrell notched the only goal of the game, running onto a through ball from Sierra Lam in the 85th minute and poking a shot around a charging Miller from 15 yards out to give the Flames the late and decisive lead.

QUOTING COACH LOMBARDO
"This was a disappointing outcome for us. We played 90 minutes of the best soccer we've played all season. We were creative throughout the match, but Liberty played its gameplan to perfection and got the win. It was a good game for us, but they had a great goalkeeper and we missed just enough opportunities to finish the day disappointed. All credit to Liberty for sticking to their gameplan and getting the win."
