HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison climbed back from a pair of two-goal deficits on a rainy Sunday afternoon, but William & Mary scored with less than 15 minutes left to hand the Dukes a 4-3 loss in the Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer quarterfinals at Sentara Park. JMU closes its season at 9-10 (4-5 CAA).
After falling behind 2-0 and 3-1, freshman
Ginger Deel and sophomore
Haley Crawford each scored goals within 10 minutes of each other to level things, but the Tribe added a fourth goal with 14:37 to play to seal the contest. Senior
Kylie Hegemier scored the Dukes' opener just before halftime, while Crawford led JMU with a match-high three shots.
HOW THEY SCORED
JMU
41' | Hegemier gave the Dukes the momentum with just 4:35 to play in the opening half with her first goal of the season. Sophomore
Phoebe Dinga found junior
Steffi Page in the box, allowing Page to turn and fire a low ball across the goal that Hegemier slid in to bury from less than 12 yards.
59' | Deel cut the deficit back to one shortly after the Tribe's third goal, playing a quick back-and-forth with Crawford before curling in her fourth goal of the year from 25 yards out that made it 3-2.
69' | Crawford leveled things less than 10 minutes later, taking a layoff from junior
Christine Tack and ripping a shot right under the crossbar from 20 yards out to make it 3-3 on her seventh goal of the season.
W&M
5' | Sami Grasso opened the scoring after Rachel Moore dribbled into the left side of the box, laying off a pass into the middle of the six-yard box that Grasso only needed to tap in to make it 1-0.
13' | Mackenzie Kober put the Dukes in an early two-goal hole after Moore lofted a long pass over the top of the defense, letting Kober run on to it and finish the one-on-one chance from the top of the area.
54' | Moore scored her own goal early in the second half, finding herself on the end of a low cross from Sarah Segan and burying a shot from just outside 12 yards to make it 3-1.
76' | Elysse Branton notched the winner for W&M, going on a long run down the right wing before cutting in and forcing in a deflected shot that rolled just inside the far post to give the Tribe the win.
